Shashi Tharoor Narrates Jallianwala Bagh Massacre at Auckland Writers Festival, Englishman Apologises on Britain's Behalf
17/May/2018

Shashi Tharoor, a man of words is known for donning many hats. Along with being a politician, he is also a writer, author, a former international civil servant, and lately an English teacher (much loved by his pupils) on Twitter. Other than these, the Congress MP is quite popular for bashing the British for ruling India for over 150 years and subsequently diminishing the country of its rich resources. In 2015, one of his speeches at the Oxford on the topic 'Britain Owes Reparations to Her Former Colonies' which was well received by the audience had gone viral on social media.

And seems recently, when Tharoor recently received a chance to talk, he used it to its fullest. The 62-year-old took to Twitter saying that he was recently invited at the opening gala of Auckland Writers Festival 2018 where he had to tell a 'true story'. He narrated the horrific story of Jallianwala Bagh massacre in which hundreds of Indians were killed in a gunfire by the Britishers. The Jallianwala Bagh massacre, also known as the Amritsar massacre is known as one of the deadliest bloodbaths of history.

Tharoor in his tweet said that after he finished his speech, an Englishman came up to him and gave him a note. The picture shared along with the tweet reads: 'I am a British born and I am sorry'.

Here is Shashi Tharoor's tweet:

When selected authors were invited to tell a 7-minute “true story” at the opening gala of the , I told the story of Jallianwallah Bagh. An Englishman came up afterwards at the book signing and pressed this note into my hand.

In the past, Tharoor had said that Britain is suffering from historical amnesia and that they should apologise for Jallianwala Bagh massacre.  Tharoor's book 'An Era of Darkness: The British Empire In India' describes the treacherous nature of British rule in India. It talks about how the British government did not invest in education, eradicating poverty or anything that would result in the upliftment of Indians. At multiple international interviews and talk shows, the Kerala MP has launched scathing attacks on the British for leaving India with very little after years of plunder.
