Government has no place in bedroom; ruling party hates LGBT: Tharoor
06/September/2018

MP Shashi Tharoor lauded the Supreme Court verdict decriminalising consensual gay sex. I am pleased to welcome the Supreme Court & decision to decriminalise the consensual acts of adults in private”he said.

He also added that the government has no right to interfere in the private lives of the people and discriminate them on the basis of their sexual orientation and infringe on their rights and freedom.

Supreme court has stood up to protect equality of treatment of all of us and for the dignity of people irrespective of their personal preferences. It has stood up for the value of privacy which itself is a right, Tharoor added.

Also he added that it is a matter of freedom of Indian citizens and not a simple issue of sex. Government has no place in the bedrooms and no place in the private lives of individuals.

He also said that when he tried to present the bill to amend the law decriminalising gay sex in the parliament, it was twice interrupted by the BJP.

I have realised that many who belong to the ruling party have a strong aversion for this community. Then I myself pointed out that judicial system was the only hope for the community to get justice,” Tharoor said.
