Study of Foreign Languages in Schools

5715.DR. SHASHI THAROOR:

 

Will the Minister of HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT be pleased to state:

(a) whether it is true that the Government is contemplating excluding foreign

languages from the CBSE three languages formula;

(b) if so, the reasons therefor;

(c) whether the Government proposes to make provisions for children who had

already started learning a foreign language; and

(d) if so, the details thereof?

ANSWER

MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT

(SHRI UPENDRA KUSHWAHA)

(a) and (b): The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) offers

foreign languages as a non-compulsory subject in classes IX to XII under the

adapted three language formula and there is no proposal to exclude the

foreign languages from their curriculum.

(c): There is no such proposal under consideration of the Government.

(d): Does not arise.

Relevance
 
In October, 2017, it was reported the that Ministry of HRD may remove foreign languages from the 3 language formula for CBSE schools. However, in response to the query, the Ministry has clarified that foreign languages will not be removed from the formula.
