Will the Minister of ENVIRONMENT, FOREST AND CLIMATE CHANGE be pleased to state:

  • whether the Government proposes to limit the amount of phosphorus allowed in detergent products to 2 per cent owing to its highly polluting nature;
  • if so, the details thereof; and
  • if not, the reasons therefor?

ANSWER

MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT, FOREST AND CLIMATE CHANGE

(DR. MAHESH SHARMA)

(a) to (c) Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the responsible agency for formulation of standards for products including detergents, which are of voluntary in nature. It does not have any proposal to limit the amount of phosphorous in detergent to 2.2%. The concerned Committee of BIS, which takes into account all relevant factors before arriving at any conclusion, has not recommended limiting of phosphorus to less than 2.5% for any type of detergents.
