(a) whether India''s import of 75 per cent of its total requirement of high-end medical equipment is a major cause of inflated medical bills of the patients; (b) whether the Government is likely to set up more Medical Devices Parks in the States/Union Territories to promote indigenous production of medical devices and boost the efforts under Make in India; (c) if so, the details thereof, State/ UT-wise and if not, the reasons therefor; (d) whether the Government would also consider establishing a separate department or authority to regulate high-end medical devices and manufacturing of pharmaceutical equipment in the country; and (e) if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor? |

(a): As per the recommendations of the Task force on Medical Devices Sector in India 2015, 65% of the medical equipments available in the country are imported. It is not possible to correlate medical bills with cost of medical – equipments.

(b): There is no such scheme at present being operated by Department of Pharmaceuticals.
(c): In view reply to (b) above, does not arise.
(d) & (e): The Government has amended the Business Allocation Rules 1961 vide its Notification dated 5th Aug 2015 by including issues relating to promotion, production and manufacture of Medical Devices under Ministry of Chemical and Fertilizers, Department of Pharmaceuticals.
