Veteran diplomat-turned-politician Shashi Tharoor feels in the 21st century India needs to play an important role in global affairs including in the realm of regional security.
Tharoor’s assessment of Indian diplomacy over the years in the form of his new book ‘Pax Indica’ was released here by UAE foreign affairs minister Shaikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Tharoor, Minister of State for Human Resource Development, an author of 13 books, said in a globalised world, a country’s domestic scenario – be it food imports or energy security – were linked to its foreign relations, according to The Gulf Today.
Speaking about the book, Tharoor said he has tried to indicate where Indian diplomacy needs to focus on in the world of the 21st century.
Tharoor said India’s rise in the comity of nations has made its presence in the global arena more significant. And in the 21st century, it has to play an important role on various fronts, including regional security, the paper said.
Prominent Indian community members, including India’s consul general to Dubai Sanjay Verma and chairman of India Club Ram Buxani were present at the function.
The book that also highlights the special ties between India and the UAE, was released by the UAE foreign minister. Among other things, the book encompasses India’s major relationships, its soft power and global responsibilities.
Tharoor, whose four of the first five books were fiction, before he went on to the genre of non-fiction, will again be working on a novel.
“It is difficult to write fiction as I need more free time to complete it, as compared to a non-fiction book. I began and abandoned at least three novels. But my next book will be a novel,” he was quoted as saying by Gulf News.
