Mr. Najeeb Ahmed, a student of Jawaharlal Nehru University has been missing since 15th October after allegedly being subjected to vicious attacks and death threats by members of a rival student organisation.
It has been a month since his disappearance and the police have failed to trace him. The University administration has failed to conduct a proper inquiry and failed to punish the culprits. The eye-witnesses who mustered the courage to complain against the accused have been openly threatened and intimidated.
The University, hitherto celebrated for upholding the freedom of speech and expression, now confronts a communal wave. Eye-witnesses have reported that derogatory comments, referring to his Muslim identity, were used to threaten the student. This has created a sense of insecurity among students at the University. Educational institutes are secular and should remain so.
I urge this Government to immediately, redouble its efforts to find Mr. Najeeb. I also urge the Government to take steps to guarantee the safety and security of students on campus, to reaffirm their freedom of speech and expression, freedom to protest and to collectively restore the ideals of our Constitution in public spaces.
