Regarding legitimately examining the claims of people for refugee status.
11/April/2017

Mr. Deputy Speaker, India has had an exemplary humanitarian record for almost 3,000 years of accepting and welcoming refugees from all our neighbouring countries and beyond. From the Arab world, from Aghanistan, from Sri Lanka, from Tibet, from Bangladesh, we have accepted refugees. It is to my mind a matter of grave concern that a disinformation campaign is being spread against helpless and vulnerable people. There are about 1,25,000 of these people in this country in desperate conditions who are deserving and getting help from humanitarian agencies and people. The fact is that unverifiable charges are being levied without the slightest shred of evidence against these helpless and defenceless people. I have written to the Home Minister requesting that we have a refugee and asylum law in this country so we can legitimately examine the claims of people to refugee status wherever they come from. Every democracy has this. India is letting itself down if we are going to act on the basis of rumours and press reports. I would urge the Government to take action. … (Interruptions) Mr. Sampath agrees with me, Sir.
