Will the Minister of



ROAD TRANSPORT AND HIGHWAYS be pleased to state:-


(a) whether the Union Government has taken any steps to replace the obsolete Motor Vehicles Act, 1938 with a new law;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the Government proposes to bifurcate the draft Road Safety Bill into two Bills, one on road safety, agreed for by all States and one for other transportation reforms that still require the agreement of all the States;

(d) if so, the details thereof; and

(e) if not, the reasons therefor?

(SHRI PON. RADHAKRISHNAN)

(a) & (b) Presently, the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 is in force. The government has introduced the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2016 in August, 2016 in Lok Sabha to amend certain provisions of the Act. There is no proposal under consideration of this Ministry to replace the Act with a new Law.

(c) to (e) No such proposal is under consideration of the Ministry.
