MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT(SMT. D. PURANDESWARI)

(a) & (b): Yes, Sir. These institutions form a very important segment among the premier technical institutions in the country to promote quality technical education and research. Considering their role in providing high quality technical manpower for regional and national requirements, theses institutions have been given the status of “Institutions of National Importance.”

(c) & (d) : Government has set up eight new IITs in Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh during the XI Five Year Plan. At present, there is no proposal to establish IITs during the remaining period of XI Five Year Plan. XII Five Year Plan has not been finalised.

(e): The details of course-wise seats in existing IITs are at Annexure.

(f) & (g) : Number of seats in IITs are decided by the IITs themselves.
