DECADE OF ACTION FOR ROAD SAFETY

Will the Minister of



ROAD TRANSPORT AND HIGHWAYS be pleased to state:-




(a) whether specific measures have been introduced to reduce road fatalities by 50% in pursuance of the `Decade of Action for Road Safety` adopted by the UN General Assembly for 2011-2020; 

(b) if so, the details thereof; 

(c) whether the Government has reduced the allocation of funds for road safety in the current budget; and 

(d) if so, the reasons for reduction in allocation?


ANSWER


THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF ROAD TRANSPORT AND HIGHWAYS (SHRI KRISHANPAL GURJAR) 

(a) to (b) Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has adopted a multi-pronged strategy to address the issue of road safety based on four E’s of Road Safety viz. (i) Education (ii) Enforcement (iii) Engineering (roads as well as vehicles) and (iv) Emergency care and constituted five working groups to recommend the course of action. The consolidated report of the working groups recommending various short terms and long terms has been advised to the States for implementation. Based on the aforesaid strategy and in pursuance of the `Decade of Action for Road Safety` adopted by the UN General Assembly for 2011-2020, the ministry is in the process of finalizing the ‘Action Plan for Road Safety’ in consultation with State Governments to reduce road fatalities by 50%.
